头层皮一般都比二层皮要薄，头层皮上面有自然的皮肤纹理。
二层皮
二层皮纤维层比较疏松，要喷涂化工原料或抛光后才能用来制作皮具制品，有一定的弹性但强度较差，耐用性不如头层皮好。
二层皮表面没有吸水性。耐低温性差，温度低时易发生折皱，牛皮二层革平展，做压花等特殊工艺后无明显缺陷。
二层经过涂饰或贴膜等系列工序制成二层革，它的牢度耐磨性较差。使用后没有自然的褶皱。
