是在1865年出版的《爱丽丝梦游仙境》小说第七章中茶会情节，在那场不可思议的下午茶会上，疯帽匠（Mad Hatter）睡鼠、兔子一起喝茶时疯帽子说的一句话，茶会上，疯帽子问道：“为什么乌鸦像写字台？
在小说当中，这个问题无论是疯帽匠、爱丽丝还是茶会上的其他人都没有回答（因为话题很快转到别的问题上了）。然而很多读者都对这一谜题很感兴趣，有不少人甚至直接写信询问作者。
起初，它的意思是一个无法回答的谜语。
在这本书的原版中，疯帽子承认谜语没有答案。
从书中的以下段落中可以明显看出这一点：
“Have you guessed the riddle yet?” the Hatter said, turning to Alice again.
“你猜到谜语了吗？”帽子匠说，又转向爱丽丝。
“No, I give it up,” Alice replied. “What’s the answer?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea,” said the Hatter.

回归主题：
因为乌鸦可以produce a few notes（发出声音），写字台可以produce a few notes（用来做笔记）。在《爱丽丝梦游仙境》中，“乌鸦像写字台”是爱丽丝用来比喻喜欢一个人没有道理，并非其字面意思。
作者刘易斯·卡罗尔（Lewis Carroll）从未打算这个谜语有一个明确的答案，但他后来在本书的更新序言中提供了答案。
卡罗尔在该书出版30余年后的再版中加入了一则序言

Auther's Note
Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz. 'Because it can produce a few notes, though they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought: the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all.

第一个解答利用了两处双关：note可以是“音符”或“笔记，标签”；flat可以是“（声音）平淡单调”或“平坦、平滑”。
‘note’在这里可以理解为“乌鸦的叫声”.
flat有“平坦的”和“（色彩）单调的”意思,对于乌鸦来说既可以理解为其叫声单调乏味,也可以理解成它的毛色单一.
第二个解答中，卡罗尔故意将never拼成nevar，因为nevar倒拼就是raven。
不过这个双关居然在这之后的所有版本中都被改回never了...大概编辑觉得这是作者手滑吧。btw，这个‘错误’被改正不久后，卡罗尔就去世了。（也不知道他有没有发现自己设计的这个文字游戏被当成笔误处理掉了...）
《爱丽丝》问世一百多年以来，读者们还是争相解答这一谜题，其中许多巧妙的回答也流传至今。
说到这个的谜题，不得不提的是一个叫Sam Loyd的人。
有个非常有名的解答出自他之手：
Because Edgar Allan Poe wrote on both.
爱伦坡写了一首著名的诗叫Raven，所以可以说是他写了raven的诗，也可以说是他在书桌上写作。
这一解答也被很多读者推崇，认为是最妙的解答。Loyd本人给出的最佳答案是：
Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.
有人这么认为
“because Poe wrote on both.
这里的Poe指的是作家埃德加·爱伦·坡(Edgar Allan Poe）,他曾于1845年发表了一篇广受赞誉的名为《乌鸦》（The Raven）的诗.因此这句话可以理解为两个意思：
“Poe wrote on raven.”（爱伦坡写过有关乌鸦的文章.）
“Poe wrote on a writing desk.”(爱伦坡在写字台上写文章.)

你翻译的意思没错，圆滑咋解读出来的？
1914年，Loyd的遗作《谜语百科》出版，里面还有他创作的其它答案。比如：
Bills and tales are among their characteristics.
Because they both stand on their legs, conceal their steels (steals), and ought to be made to shut up.
Aldous Huxley（就是我们熟知的《美丽新世界》作者赫胥黎）在1928年发表的一篇文章中也对这个问题进行了讨论，他认为：
Because there's a b in both, and because there's an n in neither.
个人认为应该这么解读，有说不清楚的相同之处，却又在不同之处有相通之处，难以名状，这像极了爱情！
有些解读从问题本质讨论这个问题
because there is a B in both and an N in neither.
如果将这句话作为对问题的答案而理解成“两个里面都有一个B并且都没有N.”的话,会发现根本不对,就会更糊涂.其实这句话的意思是“单词both 里面有一个B,单词neither 里面有一个N.” 这个答案有趣的地方就在于,用一个毫无意义的答案回答一个毫无意义的问题,虽然答非所问,却造成了一种荒谬和笑话落差.
问题本质上这么说确实没问题，但很明显在卖弄学问，炫技，两个伟大人比不上你？难怪近代没这伟大的人出现，思想已经局限住了。
写作背景及延伸
卡罗尔的地方是他年轻时对文字的俏皮。每个谜语都隐藏着另一个文字游戏谜语。
他的谜语（及其答案）通常同时意味着几件事。
“他们很平”
乌鸦产生的音符都是平坦的，因为它们在音高或音色上没有任何显着变化。
写字台上的手写便条也是平的。
平面在应用于乌鸦的“note”时表示声音，而当应用于写字台时，它意味着“note”的几何形状
“而且它永远不会把错误的一端放在前面”
谜语答案的这一部分提供了几种含义。
最重要的是对“nevar”一词的反向拼写的引用。往后看，这个故意拼错的词是“乌鸦”。
“前面的错误结尾”是指倒写的单词，这种情况从未发生过（当然，除了她更新的序言）。

三、Poe and Puzzles
指Edgar Allan Poe 此人，poe和谜题
这个谜语最著名的答案之一来自数学家、国际象棋选手和益智发明家山姆·洛伊德Sam Loyd
他提出两个观点
①“Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.”
他的答案本身就是一个抒情谜语，让人自行思考和解读，无疑是高明的！
乌鸦和写字台都会产生‘note’，但都不是音乐特有的音符
②“Because Poe wrote on both.”（因为坡写了这两个谜语）
当然，这显然是指著名作家埃德加·艾伦·坡（Edgar Allen Poe）。
坡在写字台上写作，并写下“关于”乌鸦的主题。事实上，他最著名的作品之一是一首名为《乌鸦》的诗。
所以说只是解读，你去评判哲人思想，无疑是自作聪明，你可能连诗人poe的万一都达不到，现今我们还在探讨，你会后世铭记吗？显然，有那种思维本身就是个笑话。
现今解读
疯帽子说：“乌鸦为什么像一张写字台？”原文如下：爱丽丝说：“因为乌鸦就像一张写字台。”帽匠问：“为什么乌鸦像写字台？”爱丽丝说：“因为我喜欢你。”哈特先生明白了爱丽丝的意思。“我喜欢你像一只乌鸦是一张写字台一样，没有理由。
双关：
一个是：“将nevar的字母顺序倒过来排列就是raven（乌鸦）。”另一个：“你永远不会把写字台倒过来放。”同样，翻译过来后双关的趣味就消失了。
Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and is nevar put with the wrong end in the front!乌鸦可以鸣叫，写字台可以写作，他们从来不会本末倒置。
而电影里又是另外不同的解释。
“为什么乌鸦像写字台” “因为我喜欢你” 是没有理由的，，看似毫无逻辑和相同之处，却又是有说不清楚的共同点的奇妙羁绊和缘分，是人类含蓄表达情感的一种非常规表达方式，问题抑或是谜语本身是毫无逻辑的荒谬，人们用这种说不清楚的荒谬来解释和诠释爱情的‘不知从何起’
